My neighbor is building a house/garage with shipping containers, he is using a ceramic paint for his insulation. Does anyone know what this stuff is and how does it work? It sounds bogus.
thanks

There's a constant source of clean water for you to use, and all you have to do is collect it.

He'll find out soon enough that you can't insulate with paint. Those steel containers don't hold much heat at all....I've got one.

I gotta bunch of steel containers, they store my 357 heat just fine<>G<
like ya say, paint is ineffective as an insulator, unless it is a few inches thick and sprayed on, then i think they call it some type of insulation rather than just thick paint.......
Snake oil is a better word. These products are promoted in a shady manner. Ceramic coatings have a time and place as an 'insulator' of sorts ... but it doesn't happen to be for what we are discussing here. I've heard stories of ... 'they use this material for the space shuttle to protect astronauts from burning up on reentry' and then claim an R-50 per inch or some such. They especially love to use phrases similar to: 'effective R-value' which means it only has their R-value under very particular conditions ... which are often not found in the typical applications that we see in heated/cooled occupied spaces for human comfort.
I've heard of the new shipping container houses ... but the ones I saw use 'real' insulation, I think. Your friend will find out how expensive his uninsulated structure will be when he occupies it. He'll probably say it uses no heat energy 'cause he heats it with a wood stove (a common statement by the log home industry to sell the energy efficiency of log houses).
No building codes where you are, eh?
