Not something I thought of, but it sounded great, thought I’d toss it here and see what you all thought.
Short story, built basement out of ICF’s, stuck Carlisle MiraDri membrane over it to 6″ above proposed finish grade. I can’t afford to place stone or brick veneer on the exposed sections of the wall yet, so I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what to use, that will protect the foam, yet be somewhat durable. There’s a section of wall that is a walkout, and the areas around the door will certainly see some abuse, more that your typical parging will endure.
The guy who is helping me design my timberframe mentioned attaching 1/4″ cement board or Hardi Board (tile backer) with some stainless steel screws over any exposed foam, and overlap the membrane just a few inches. That way, I can parge or stucco over the tile backer, it’ll stick better than it will to the foam, and it’s a lot more durable.
Anybody see any downside to this concept, other than the expense and the weather resistance of the tile backer? I do plan on attaching some sort of stone or fake stone veneer over the board someday, but it’s likely to be three to five years before that gets done.

I have used durarock over foam (1/2" durarock on 1 1/2" Formular over a poured wall foundation) a couple of times in the past.
First time was about ten years ago - still looks good.
