How do I fix a door to my office that closes halfway when I open it full?
I know that one can tweak the hinge or door pin somehow but I do not know exactly. I have walked into it on occasion when it is dark thinking it was open. Thanks for any help.GW

Tilt building in opposite direction?
*I believe that if you remove a hinge pin and put ab slightbend in it, then put it back that will slow the door down.Never done it myself, but I've read it here a few times.Or take a level and an 8 pound sledge with a scrap of 2x4......Rich Beckman
*Is there a particular type of Simpson metal shim that I should use to tilt the house or would Pine shims do the job? I'm waiting for an answer here. GW
*Add a small amount of water to lubricate the hinge pins. Wait. After a while the rust that develops will cause the door to sit in whatever position you left it. Caution. May stain woodwork and squeek when moved. To maintain effectiveness resist urge to do something about that squeek.

*First off, I would NEVER use an 8 lb. sledge on a level, the 20 lb. works better, and on the tilt idea; just use a screw(probably a REALLY big one) under the house and adjust until happy...
*Seriously,Remove the top hinge pin and lay it on a flat, hard surface. Lightly TAP the pin with a claw hammer. Reinstall the pin and check the door. If the door still opens slightly, do the same procedure to the bottom hinge.James DuHamel
*Thanks James, The job is done and the door is working fine. Mad Dog, Thanks for your fine idea on the house tilting but I am only renting this house and I wanted to get the job done this morning. GW
*Shoot Greg, out there in Cali, you probably won't have to wait too long, it WILL tilt!Glad you got it fixed,MD
*Door swinging open is a sign that the lower hinge mortise on the jamb was cut too deep or that the jamb is not plumb. For mortise -- use heavy card for shims (yes I've found sliced playing cards in there). For jamb -- re-frame wall.
*Greg,For $3500 I can hook you up with a network that can start a dialog and negotiate a possible solution for your problem.Or you could bend the pin which you did so there goes my commission thanks a lot!Ed.
*LOL This is the RK network that teaches negotiation by hitting your head against the wall, right? Will ther chuckles never end!
*The important thing in messing up the pin is to do just barely enough to hold the door from swinging. Too much and it puts a godawful strain on the screws and makes them strip out after a time. Correcting the axis with shims is a superior solution.-- J.S.
*folks called me one day to look at an entry door that was dragging at the threshold. Someone had told them that the foundation was heaving and that they would need to spend mucho to fix it.I asked, "Well, what if we were to tighten these screws in the TOP HINGE?"Earned some points that day.
*If all else fails put an old stinky boot against the door. Does it every time
*Does a stinky boot work better than a ladies pump?
*How bout a kickdown door stop.
*Oh Geez do I risk an R rated answer here or not? NOT!
*Yeah, it sounds good, Ed, but yours is a "10-step program."I can solve Greg's problem in...nine steps!Though I also charge $3500, he gets 1.5% knocked off if he pays in full within 30 days.
*Jeez Mongo,I can't touch that.Only nine steps AND a discount?I'm screwed.I thought RK's deal was too good to be true.Ed.
*I adjust doors by using a vise grip and bending the hinge with the door closed either right or left (use a cloth between the tool and the hinge so it doesn't mark it) Done carefully, it works like magic and only takes a minute.
*Jim,Great old trick. I forgot about that one. I was taught to do that with a cresent wrench.Thanks,Ed.
*Mongo, I know absolutely nothing about this serious structural problem, but my 12 step, $5,000 programme- note that serious British spelling- can resolve this customer dissatisfaction perception into a verbose 'win-win' customer satisfaction relationship. The slight involvement of lawyers is our choice. Step off my patch of verbal flatulence,...okay,.... pal. ;-) R....er,..J.
