One room in my house the ceiling paint is falling off (large pieces) and in another room the paint is falling off of the cornice. The house was built in 1930, new roof (no water damage), I scaped the cornice and primed it, on the ceiling I scaped off the loose bits and washed the entire ceiling with TSP and rinsed with water. I waited 4 days before painting. When I bought the house the same problems were evident. What is the problem and how do I fix it?
Thanks
Rick

Check the humidity level throughout the different rooms of your house.
Houses built in the 30s didn't have to deal with today's lifestyles. People took baths not showers, cloths were washed in wringer washers in the kitchens and dried outside, etc. The heating system was also probably changes.
You may have to re-evaluate your house's ability to deal with today's demands.

*scuff sand the peeling spots, then prime with zinnser oil base, then spackle with durabond 45 joint comppund(dry mix), sand smooth, then prime again with oil primer(entire ceiling)and go ahead and put your favorite color on (2coats). it won't peel for a few years unless you have a water leak over it. all plaster homes eventually have this problem and i have found that plenty of oil paint will keep the plaster in check!!
*Rd - Your problem may be calcimine (Kalsomine) paint, to which very little sticks. It's not easy to remove (search the net using 'calcimine' or visit some of the Old House forums) but it can be done using hot water. It's not necessarily just a 'gloss' problem - it's the material itself.Jeff
*Rick, Keep in mind this is just a guess. I assume the house was constructed with out insulation, and in not to recent past, insulation was blown into the walls and attic. Now the house is insulated without a vapor barrier. At some point in that insulated wall, warm moist air is meeting cold outside air and condensating. Moisture in the walls and ceiling is a major cause of paint problems like yours. If you have siding on the house that is painted I also assume your having trouble with paint peeling their as well.Since you indicated your peeling problems are on the ceiling, check for proper attic ventilation to facilitate removal of excess moisture. I also have heard of a product that will act as a vapor barrier applied like paint to the interior.Good luck, hope this helps.Scott R.
