The wood tend to insulate the aluminum from the heat. Aluminum clad windows have been around a few days with no major problems. Lots of aluminum trim in Illinois.

I've inspected wood underneath 15 year old alum. trim, and saw no damage. But I have also seen it
rot in 3 or 4 years under badly installed trim.
One of my customers likes to prime the trim underneath aluminum. Cheap insurance.

Several folks here have mentioned wrapping exterior trim with aluminum. Mike Guretin used it on his new house, and there was a feature article about it in a recent JLC. All of which makes me think it is a fairly common practice. The building side of the wrap would be warmer than the weather side in cold months. This seems like a classic condensation trap to me. What about it? - yb
*One has to wonder...How much freakin' condensation can really occur there? Too much focus and concern on such minor stuff. I would worry about putting it up the right way so as not to let water get in behind it. Aluminum trim tip of the day:The less caulk the better. too much caulk around aluminum trim work will do more to seal in moisture than to keep it out.Pete Draganic
*the only problem I've noticed with aluminum wraps has been improper installation. If it is installed to catch water insead of shed it, it makes a great way to speed the damage.Pete's right, to much caulk is bad. Only caulk it where it needs help staying in place or water pentration could be a problem. It is a common practice in our area (Columbus Oh)as well. Would think it's not just a midwestren thing
