Is “Builder” mag a decent publication??
Is “Builder” magazine a decent publication?? I swear by FH & FW but got a mailing offer for this mag and was wondering if anyone thought it was worth the additional subscription.

It's good for some design ideas from the homes they featuer, but it's geared mostly to production builders. Mostly industry trends, ups/downs in the market, etc. I used to read it when I got it for free, but I stopped once I had to pay for it (they cut out free subscriptions to all but the biggest builders)- wasn't getting enough value for the $$.
Bob
Bob,
Thank you for the response. For the most part, my business is channelled to high-quailty interior trimwork doing mostly renovations. We do some interior framing and quite a bit of drywall work (all in preparation for the trim installation). It doesn't sound as though this publication is going to give me anything that helps my biz. Would you agree?
Bill
I'd say you'd get very little from the magazine, other than pictures of some nice interior trim in model homes, etc.
Bob
If you don't already get it, "Walls & Ceilings", http://www.wconline.com , might be interesting and useful. It's a freebie, too.
You can never have to much good stuff to read, I think it's a good mag, it's geared at advertising. So to keep up on all the good products it's valuable.
It is also avalilable on a pro basis so that would be my choice. IE. free.
Clay
Clay,
Thanks for the response, I'd like to hear more about that "pro basis" route.
Get it only if it's free. I read it for 12 years when I had a corp job in the door biz, but I would never pay a nickel otherwise. For you, I would get FH, JLC, TOH, maybe Fine Woodworking.
From Hanley Wood or some other publisher, there is a mag out there called Professional Remodeler. If you can get a copy of that, see if it makes sense to you. From your profile given, it might be OK for you, but definitely not "Builder."
I just got my first copy of Remodeler and couldn't put it down.
Would Professional Remodeler be in the BIG bookstores?

Many of these trade journals are available for free if the info you submit indicates that you are amoung the prime group of clients that their advertisers are attempting to reach.
Since Builder is aimed at builders who construct quite a few residential palaces every year, they are probably loking for builders who have a grooss of a few million in sales to give it to you free.
Many of the same articles and information are in other periodicals in the Hanley Wood lineup, Things that apply to industry trends, proiducts, management, etc. modified for eaxch sub-group of professioonals.
I agree that pro remo is one of the best of the bunch. I also like Traditional Building and Period Homes mags..
Excellence is its own reward!
Fantastic. Thank you for the links. After a good nights sleep I will scan all of these tomorrow.
Actually, I misspoke. It's "Remodeling", a Hanley Wood publication. I'm not sure how I started getting it. I think I must have gotten an offer in the mail and in a weak moment subscribed.
I haven't had much time to browse at book stores, so I don't know if it can be found on the rack anywhere.
Only good if you like adds in my opinion, I dont get it anymore.
I read it for free, but decided not to pay.
JLC is much better.
O.K, I can't figure out JLC. Could you turn the light on for me please?
Gonna feel really stupid when you tell me and I see how thick I am.

Glad he asked what JLC was so that I didn't feel like the only one who wasn't "in the know"! Thanks for the input.
it's one of a coupla I get for free...
but I'm really getting tired of filling out those info questionaires all the time ..
so the list of freebies is getting smaller and smaller.
For me ... it's not a keeper ... I scan and review for a coupla days then throw it away.
I keep the FHb and JLC's.
