I have a new interior ceiling that consists of tongue and groove 8″ x 3/4″ aspen run on a 45 degree chevron pattern with individual board lengths of about 6 feet. It is located in one large room that includes the living, dining and kitchen areas with 10′ ceilings. Is it necessary to seal this with some type of finish material? It is very white/light in color and I want to keep it this way and do not want any type of stain that would darken or yellow it. There are 10″ diameter logs, also very light of color, that span the ceiling about every four feet. The logs are “dead standing Englemann spruce.” Should any type of finish material be applied to the logs?
I have basically the same question for a porch that has 1 x 4″ cedar on the ceiling. Is it necessary to protect it with a finish?? I am using Sikkens on the redwood posts that support the porch since they will be exposed to the elements but like the current look of the “bare” cedar tongue and groove and cedar beams.
thanks for any suggestions.
