Found a good price on used firebrick. The ad stated “firebrick” but the seller said his first responce to the ad looked and claimed they were just regular brick. The sellar demo’d them from the exterior of and old home. They measure 4″by8″.Is there any way to test this brick for heat tolerance? Would the color be indicative of firebrick? Thanks for any response.Don

Take one to an experienced older mason and he should be able to give you the skinny on the bricks.
Let the thunder crack and the waves roar.

If they were taken from the exterior of a building, they are fired-brick.
Fire-brick has no real structural capability. They are commonly blonde in color, with smooth faces and each brick has the equivalent weight of a feather. You could easily snap one with your bare hands. Used for lining fireplaces, fire-pits and kilns, I could not imagine them being used in an exterior application.
