Is the Intertnet gettig slower?

MisterT | Posted in General Discussion on September 29, 2003 01:55am

Or is it just my computer?

Seems that over the past 6 mo. or so, links are just taking longer to load.

Some times they just pop right up like they used to, other times I can defrost a side of beef while I am waiting.

I got a windoze 98 mochine connected thru Roadrunner (meep meep)

One of my amateur theories is, that with all the viruses and virus protection stuf out there, things are just getting bogged down.

Or maybe there is just too much traffic at times.

Or Maybe I have warped into another space time continuum and every thing just seems slower.

We've arranged for it to be slower for YOU ONLY. For everyone else it's fine................(-:

Seriously - It might have a lot to do with what time of day you're online. Evening hours are typically maxed out. Early morning or really late evenings will probably work a little faster.

Condoms should be used on every conceivable occasion.

I think I've seen the same thing using WinXP and a cable modem.

For me it varies from site to site, with forums and the such slowing down the most.  I believe forums are server intensive as they are actually databases, and each time you go to a thread the server is doing some db work

I suspect that in large part it's from growth of internet activity and a hold on investment in infra-structure.  during the 90's bubble, most site administrators and IT type folks could probably get most of the infra-structure (servers, software, development) they asked for.

I suspect that hasn't been true for a couple of years, so increased activity is using the same amount of resources.

      >Have you defragmented in the last 6 mos?

Or has your computer? [You deserve a few back like that!]

Could even be RoadRunner. I just got a letter from our cable supplier saying that service has been slower be/c paradoxically they were upgrading the lines. Now they're offering 2 Mbps speed...double.

Don't you just love notices like that..

I was trying to use my cellphone the other day, and I kept getting "network busy"  so as I'm cursing sprint due to the fact I'm about 20 miles from their world headquarters and service isn't what I would consider great...

I decide to call call customer service to complain/find out whats going on The lady says, well sir, we are upgrading are network currently all in an effort to bring you better service, so you may experience some difficulites yadda yadda yadda.

She didn't like the, well it can't get much worse...

Probably just your neighbors getting broadband & sharing the pipe with you.  Cable is ornery that way - the more the un-merrier.

I used to have RR and they never promised anything on speed except a cap - now I moved & have comcast - who guarantees a certain minimum amount of throughput.

Items downloading 'slower' may seem that way if your system is doing more work than you realize.

Try the 'AdAware' program available from http://www.grc.com - this trustable program will check your system to see if there are any other programs communicating on your connection while you are surfing.

This program will check to see what other services may be running on your system - if you keep your computer on-line all the time, you may have received a 'zombie' program that is using YOUR cpu-time and connection to send stuff around to other people.

Cleaning your caches is also helpful, sometimes.

    good luck,

    TJ

The SPYBOT search and destroy function is awesome....found 246 mini programs on my PC the other week, all communicating my activity back to varioius sites. I promoptly got rid of them. Speed did increase, not dramatically, but noticable by an appreciable amount. I am amazed at "legit" companies who store cookies or privacy-invading programs to communicate your business back to them and you don't know about it.

Also, one thing that slows the net down a lot is spam mail. It's gotten worse proportionately the last few months I understand. I delete on average 100 junk mails a day. All that crap trying to fit through a high speed pipe that can handle only so much traffic slows EVERYone down, not just mail servers.

For anyone using spybot: search and destroy...

Reinstall the program. This time install the program for blind users.

(I read the instructions during installation. It said that this version had icons for the blind. I thought, "what the..." And installed it, just because I wanted to see what kind of icons could be there for blind people. LOL)

Bingo !!! Lots of options and settings to be had in this version, that I didn't see in the "normal" version. Sucker even dug into my registry this time. Found several homeless keys and such...

A good heart embiggins even the smallest person.
