Is the Makita 5903 circular saw any good

I’m looking for a 9 1/4 inch circular saw that will be used for finish work.
My local tool dealer tells me the Makita 5903 has problems with the gears and recommends a Hitachi C9.

Can anyone verify if this is a known problem.
