I’ve been thinking of getting a dust collector for my little basement shop. I have admittedly not done much research (read that as NO research), but this came up on my Amazon recommendations today – is it a good deal? Powerful enough for no more than one or two tools at once? CLICK ME Thanks –

I looked into that, but chose the Harbor Freight for 179.00 on sale, bigger, higher CFM, and lower center of gravity, twin 4" inlets or one 5"(maybe 6") ..just a sweet deal and works flawlessly.
If you like that Delta tho', it is a good price. Personally, I wasn't impressed dollar for dollar.

Both are likely made in the same plant in Taiwan?
Pretty certain , yes.
But if you look at the specs, for another 40 bucks or so, you get a good amount more suction(G).Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

See post 6...it really is a good machine, I have one 4" tube dedicated to the Table saw, the other 4" drifts to the planer(s) jointer, and add a 2" x 20' ext . the router tables and chopsaw stand.
I also remeoved the screen going into the impellor, planer and hand plane shavings would clog, it really is a safty thing for hands in the hole..not much else.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Thanks Sphere!! I'll keep my eye out. I've got two of their retail stores within about 30 minutes of me so I'll keep an eye out for a sale.Shop is in my basement and I'm getting tired of having to shovel the dust up in my living space. <G>Shawn

If you choose the HF be sure to get the extended coverage plan.
I have a HF CM drill press that has been a sweetheart for the last 5 years, but I have had some bad luck with the smaller stuff.
My 2 cents .........Downside to the AP400 and the HF are the bags ........... they're 30 micron. It's the fine stuff that will kill 'ya. http://ohioline.osu.edu/aex-fact/0595_1.html Quite a few folks upgrade the HF with a Wynn Environmental filter which almost puts you in Delta 50-760 pricewise which comes out of the box with 1 micron bags. If $ is the issue I'd go with the HF because of it's greater performance for little more money and plan on spending some $ down the road on either better bags or the Wynn filter.
I have that one. It came free as part of a promo with the Delta 14" bandsaw (Great promo BTW... maybe they'll have it again. I got $100 off the regular bandsaw price, the dust collector, and the PC laminate trimmer. But I digress.....)
Obviously, it's a good deal if it's free, but if you're paying real dough I'd be inclined to save my pennies for something in the $200 range or better. This unit is made of the cheapest, thinnest sheet metal, the bags are porous, and the motor strength is minimally acceptable. Ask yourself how often you'll be using the unit in the next ten years. If it's more than twenty times then I'd save up. Sphere sounds like he's onto something good...(as usual). I'd consider the HF one myself.

Ditto what Shpere said. I have one that BIL and partner bought for machine shop. Theirs was from J&L Industrial for more bucks than HF but seems to be the same. I am shopping for 1 micron bags for it. Amazon has a plastic bottom and 1 micron top for $66. Penn State has set of both cloth for $78 with shipping.
I think it is a lot of suction for the $ but when you fire it up you see a small cloud come off the upper bag. The 1 micron setup should fix that. I intend to use a contactor and rig up remote switching after converting it to 220/240. Will use four way or three way switches for trigger for the contactor.
I was going to start a thread asking what other folks' experience was with the cloth over plastic vs both cloth was. Sort of minor hijack if anyone has opinion/experience.

Thanks to all for the heads up on the extended warranty and the 1-micron bags. I'll will definately go for both. As I said, I am trying cut down on the winter snowfall like covering of dust up stairs. I'm single so I have no wife to "encourage" me to dust ..... its gets pretty ugly at times.

Very quiet compared to a lot of the others--be sure to check out the db ratings. It's been great and I would buy another.
