I had a house built 4 years ago, and have started another recently. The lumber in this new house is garbage–moldy, knotty, edges that are ragged, plywood with worm holes. What the heck? The old house didn’t have any apparent lumber quality issues. Is all lumber like that now? Is there a regular old 2X6 that is square with clean edges to be had anywhere?

sure it is havent you ever seen that commercial for lowes top choice lumber?that bunk of perfect 2xs the have sitting there?shortly after that came out i had to go there for a couple boards and they were close by.looking for some straight stuff one of the associates came over and asked if he could help me with something, told him i was looking for that nice lumber i saw on tv the other night he told me it must not have been deliver yet lol
All the good lumber is being shipped to China and/or Iraq, along with the scrap steel, portland cement, plywood, OSB, etc., etc.
Yes, I agree that the quality of lumber is rapidly declining. I have one lumberyard in my area in which I can still find some premium lumber - at a premium price. The good thing is the yardman will through on all the "cr@p" lumber (twisted, warped, etc.) that comes out of his pile at no charge. I use the bad stuff for blocking and bracing - places where "straight and true" won't show or matter. I am now using steel where ever I can. No picking through a pile of 2x's for the perfect piece, the steel studs are all perfect. My next jump will be into ICF's (insulated concrete forms) for exterior walls.
Ply from China at HD.
15/32 CDX is down to $19+
7/16 OSB $17+
Expensive crap is what they have.

Were getting cabinet ply(some kind of birch, paint grade) from china, 3/4", I think we are paying around 22 or 23 bucks a sheet, real good quality.

The stuff I saw looked decent too. I was wondering what kind of wood it was, the face veneer did look like birch but who knows what it is.
Maybe Chinese CDX would have all the knot holes filled with hand trimmed little pieces of scrap?

Wouldn't that make it BCX or CCX?
seems more like the price in roman numerals..lol CCX..

Certainly not a labor shortage!

I wonder what they're using for adhesive in China. Have you tried soaking a scrap of it to see if the CDX is really X?
