Stupid Homeowner question #73:
I have a light to hang over a Kitchen Island. As luck would have there is a floor joists running dead center of the island. Is there a way to put the jbox centered on the bottom of the joist?? We tried mounted the box to the side of the joists, but it looked terrible.
Thanks for your help.

They make a ceiling fan box that is designed to be installed directly on the joist. It's like a pancake box with a sliver of round box sticking up on one third.
Hope this is helpful

I have seen plastic boxes that sit on the joist like a saddle at home cheapo.
Take a look maybe this will work for you, most of the wires could fit up inside the fixture.
A pancake box can be used, but only if it's the end of a wire run, 3 wires max (?). Otherwise a saddle box will work, but it's got to be dead center of the joist.
If you have more than 3 wires going to the box, but still want to be off center a bit, a jounction box can be placed in the attic and a single wire brought to the pancake box.
Best of luck

Go to Home Depot and look for a light grey box that overlaps a joist and has space for the wires at the side.
Get a plumber to install the light. A joist in the way is no problem for them.
