Jet AFS-500 vs. larger air filtration
I’m looking at getting an air filtration unit. I decided I needed one when I routed soapstone in my small shop in my one-car garage (12’x20’x8′). On occasion, I’d like to be able to move the unit to a different room when I am remodelling.
I’m considering getting the Jet AFS-500 or the next size up (any one of three models — Jet 1000, JDS 750, Delta — that have roughly 750-1000cfm and are roughly 12″x24″x30″).
Forget the brands for a moment — my questions are about the size of the unit.
1) Given my size shop, is the larger unit overkill — or would it be most effective? Or, conversely, is the AFS-500 underpowered and ineffective?
2) Are the larger units I mentioned above only meant to be mounted? Or are they considerd to be portable and able to be temporarily placed in rooms while remodelling?
Thanks for your advice.

Have you thought about building one? I built one out of scrap plywood. an old furnace blower motor and pleated furnace filters. I can take pics for you and email them to you if you would like. The most expensive part was the timer I use instead of a switch. This allows me to leave it running after I am done working to get the last bits of dust out of the air.
Thanks for the suggestion. I just read about that option in a book called Woodshop Dust Control. It's got instructions for how to build one -- and it sounds like it's very similar to yours. Thanks for the offer of pictures, but I don;t think I need them as the book has them (and a construction drawing).I'l have to think about whether or not I want another project. :)
I use the Jet AFS 1000 w/ remote etc. and usually in a "portable" situation
seems like I've had it about 5 yrs & do not remember a smaller model but I can't imagine a 500 is much less than a 1000
the fan is excellent on the unit I have so would imagine 500 would be good but dust is so insidious I'd go for overkill in this regard
