What's the story, Engel? They couldn't get a hot chick to man the booth, so they're dressing you up in bikini instead? There's a scary thought.....lol

Thanks Bob. Thanks alot. That's an image I didn't have to think about.

Well, the truth is that they saw me out cycling last summer in my favorite Spandex get up, accessorized with my socks with the reclining lady logo like you see on semi mud flaps. They couldn't resist.

Stephen, the 'Lady is not bad at all. Check out their "Legs and Eggs" breakfast buffet. I think they still run it. If you run into Frank from Gloucester, give him a Yankees Suck for me, would ya?

I'll be there Fri. in DIY undercover mode. I'm trying to get an archy friend to go on the Katz tour of the John Brown house.

Just a nod toward the anti-diy contigent of the JLC crowd. Can't imagine anyone there actually cares. I'll fight the urge to ask repeated questions about drywall screws for kitchen cabinets.splat
I bet there are some that LIKE DIYers to ask questions so they don't have to, LOL
I started a thread on this a week ago, and Mike said to meet in the lobby at noon on Friday to head to lunch. Lobby is a big place, so maybe we should get more specific. How about at the base of the escalator closest to the main door on the lower level. (Near the hotel they're working on on the North side, and the info desk)Jake Gulick

jake... the main floor is on the upper level..
right outside that door ( where they check your pass as you go in ) is where i like to meet.. then you all go out the same door on the same street
so.. noon ... at the main door to the main exhibition hall.. brian is flush .. so he'll probably pick up the tab
and andy engle is probably on an expense account , so he can split the tab..

All right folks.... the eve is here. Here's the tally best I can see:
FNbenthayer is gonna be there.
Zendo's a maybe
Andy Engel is gonna be pimpin' himself at the WRC Lumber booth.
Piffin is crying in his cheerios somewhere cuz his wife took him on shopping trip instead.
Stephen Prunier is gonna be taking an "all day intensive" over at the Foxy Lady.
Splat is going undercover, so don't even look for him. I heard he's gonna camoflauge himself as the Makita tool girl to try to blend in.
Eric Paulson heard there's gonna be free lunch so he's heading down too.
Bob "I'm too sexy for you dirty contractor types" Kovacs will be making an appearance.

Bob "I'm too sexy for you dirty contractor types" Kovacs may not be heading up there. As of this morning, my stomach is churning, and based on what's been going around our office lately, I have a feeling I'll be worshiping the porcelain God sometime this evening and/or tomorrow. That wouldn't make a pleasant ride for my chauffeur, Greg Di.
We'll have to see how it goes- if I don't make it tomorrow, I guess I'll have to wait until August to see all of you sorry-azz contractor types an TipiFest......

I've heard of red eye but WTF? In the midst of lunch there were at least 22 plates on that table. I don't know how someone didn't walk out with a ravioli in their lap.
I was impressed with the size of the JLC event. I was at the Rick Arnold framing-a-dormer demonstration. It was like they had the plans written in greek. Among other issues they cut out a rafter they weren't supposed to. oops! The bosch impact driver battery died part way driving a screw. They bent it off flush with a hammer.
Still some bugs to work out there.
Useful all around, and great to meet the fellow BTers. Thanks for lunch. A day standing on concrete makes for a long day.

Regarding the "dormer framing" demo. Aren't you glad to see that this crap doesn't just happen to you? I always smile to myself when watching one of the demo's and something goes wrong. Not because I want to see those guys embarrassed, but because it's nice to see I'm not alone. Sh2t happens, right? It's just the nature of the beast.View Image

I framed a low pitch bastard half octagon roof on Friday and it actually all went together without recutting a single stick. I literally had goosebumps. That probably means that the next ten roofs I cut will go together like azz. Sometimes it all comes together, but more often than not you gotta hit at least one snag.View Image

It's Never Too Late To Become What You Might Have Been
I've been reading and learning a lot from you guys here and over at JLC. I'm thinking of going for the education and to meet some of you. Sort of expensive for a non-pro though. If I show up how will I recognize whos' who. I'd probably recognize you because you'll likely be wearing a Red Sox hat and jersey. Do you guys all hang together at these things? Are the tool deals alone worth the admission?
Mike, I think it's only about $35 to get into the show. For that there's a ton of demonstrations that you can sit down and take in, along with the opportunity to stick your hand up and ask the professional instructor any questions you might have.
Then there's the exhibitors. Booths upon booths of material and tool manufacturers to browse and ask questions of. I think the 'freebie give-a-ways' that get thrown around are worth the $35 themselves. You can also ask the manufacturer's rep questions until your heart's content. It's a good chance to stay on the edge of new homebuilding products too.
Hands on demos. Hands on tool browsing. It's a pretty good time.
The tool deals are very good, but you won't walk away with a $500 table saw for $300 either. Like everything in life, some are better than others. But most are pretty darn good.
Do we all hang out together? We actually all gang up and walk around heckling the instructors and other attendees. Mike Smith usually throws his weight around a bit and starts some crap. All right, I'm kidding. I wouldn't say we all "hang out together" but we definately cross paths, chat, and maybe browse a bit together. I've been trying to have lunch with Mike Smith at this thing for the past three years. Hasn't happened yet, but there's a first time for everything.
And it sure beats working!View Image
Thanks. I got confused on the pricing. I see now that the expo is only $35. I'll probably show up. You're right, it beats working."With every mistake we must surely be learning"

BTW, didja see those offered rates for framing carps in Wilmington, NC? Here on the help-wanted pages? No wonder they can frame in the range of $3.50 to $5.50 per sf down there.

Well, I guess he'll get exactly what he's looking for then. The guy specifically asked for spanglish speaking help with little or no experience. If he can frame houses with a crew made up of that then God bless him. I just don't have it in me.View Image

Looks to me like they knew something about framing back then. Even with some spanish help, I'll bet they can do it again.
Here is a little vignette about Mexico. When I was in the door biz at ThermaTru, we closed all our plastics molding operations stateside, and opened a big new greenfield plant in Matamoros, Mexico. Across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, TX. Shipped all our old injection presses there, from our plants up north and down south.
The Mexicans reconditioned those machines and ran them more efficiently than we had run them in years!
And our plant workers in Matamoros came to work in the factory each day, dressed better than our stateside workers dressed for weddings and funerals.
And they were paid less than 1/10th of what our U.S.workers made.
Wages aren't everything.
Gene, thanks for the lecture on the worth ethics and habits of Mexicans but I never said a bad word about them?! In fact I never even mentioned Mexicans?! All I said was that if that guy wants to build a house with guys with no experience who don't speak the same language as him.... then go for it, more power to him. But it ain't for me. What's up with you? Can't find anyone else to roll around in the dirt with?View Image
