My apoliges if this posting is completely off the subject of home building, but I figured there might be a mechanic around here somewhere….
I have a JD STX 46 that is about 10 years old, with pretty light use. However, the steering is REALLY, REALLY tight and the wheels just don’t seem to turn. It’s like something is binding, but I couldn’t find anything. The tires are a little low, but definately not flat. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Patrick

Have you lubed it lately?

take the weight off the front end (jack it up and block it), see if the steering is still tight - follow the linkages from the front to the back, greasing and oiling every working part -
If there is an exposed gear at the bottom of the steering column, it is probably dry and full of dirt. Clean it thoroughly and lube it up good. But the down side is the lube or grease will only attract more dirt. There is a product available that is called Dry-Slide if you can find some. That would work better.
If that doesn't help you, there are several online tractor forums. You can google for them. One that rates at the top is Tractorbynet.com
