timkline | Posted in General Discussion on April 1, 2006 03:18am

I’ve been asked to consider being the GC on a kitchen with these guys:

Does anyone have anything they can share  ?  Any experiences  ?

Do you know what an "emotionally intelligent kitchen" is?

And if so can you build on?

Do you know what an "emotionally intelligent kitchen" is?

Hmmm, do you think it will be explained in the specs ?

If I had to guess,  I think it's a high fallutin way of describing the feeling that I get as I leaf through Grey's books on design.  It's a feeling of inspiration which leads to a desire to create.  His work certainly lends itself towards a feeling of comfort.

I know someone who was sold on a "Johnny Grey" kitchen.  He spent a bunch of money and got drawings that "looked good."  But the arhcitect wasn't registered in the state where the kitchen was being built and the drawings couldn't be used to get permits.  Had to have new drawings done...

To be fair I don't know if Johhny Grey was supposed to deliver designer drawings or construction ready drawings.  The problem could have been my friend's misunderstanding, or it could have been the company's problem.  Bottom line is make sure you know what you will receive before you agree on a price.

Grey's people are in San Francisco.  We are in Pennsylvania.  The architect has been here several times and has met with local code people already.  A local engineer will be hired.  No problems there.

Drawings are basic at this point.  We will need 5 times the detail for construction drawings on a job of this type.    That's the part that is a concern right now.   No specs yet.   Not quite sure if they are even on the horizon.

    How does it work?

They do the design and manufacture, and you do the on-site work?

What is your opportunity for material mark-up?

BTW, I am impressed by what I see in their portfolio.  How did they find you?

    1. timkline | Apr 02, 2006 06:19am | #7

      Gene,

They want to do the total architectural and interior design ( no structurals ) including specifying finished materials, lighting, paint colors, etc.

They have their own cabinet fabricator and cabinet installers.  We are responsible for everything else.  They generally only supply the cabinets.  This is fine by me.

As far as the mark up goes, don't know yet.

Their website doesn't do their work justice.  The homeowner lent me 3 of Grey's books.  Really amazing.  If you are ever in a good bookstore that has one, be sure to take a look.   A great variety of styles.  Outstanding quality.

We had done work for the homeowner recently and she asked us to take a look at this.  Very charming woman.

I have a book that has many of their designs in it. I like the design work. Certainly not run of the mill stuff.  Could be an interesting addition to your portfolio of work in the future.

You are correct.  Part of the appeal is the high level of detail and quality.  So many people these days accept the crap that is thrown at them in typical development home these days that it is refreshing to work for someone who has very high standards.
