Piffin and others,
I have referneced teh western wood products association joist drilling and notching doc several times when working on my house but have a nagging question about joist drilling that I don’t see mentioned….
Can I drill holes in the center third of my joist?
I know it is common folk lore not to touch the center third but the pdf only says no notching. And no notching makes a lot of sense to me but drill seems like it would be ok.
Any comments?
The reason I ask is that I need to drill 5 or so in a row for a 3/4″ water line and the center third is really the best spot.
Thanks for the help,
Rob Kress

Yes. Keep them in the middle vertically and control the size within the guidlines.

Thanks for the reply Pif. I'll certainly keep them in the middle and to a minimum (I'm talking about 7/8" or 1" holes).
Thanks again,
