Joist Hangers for Full Dimension lumber
I am sistering onto some sagging floor joists.
The existing joists are full-dimension 2x8s.
To these, I will be sistering ripped-down 2×10 nominal-dimension lumber.
The old joists were carefully notched into a beam, which is now being replaced.
Ideally, I would like to use joist hangers, but they would need to be 3 1/2 inches wide.
Does anyone know if/where I can buy such an unusual size.
Thanks for your help.

It is important to size the joist to the situation. You did not mention span but you should check the appropriate tables. When joining one joist to another to make them act as one you need to unload the existing joist before attaching them together. Often a difficult task when in place as you described. If you don't you have two separate systems. That is why I said size to the span. Or reduce the span. Liam
Right,
Joist sagging is minimal. Strength rating is ok, though stiffness could be improved.
The beam that they attach to is both undersized and cracked, and is being replaced with an engineered beam. The problem is in locating 3 1/2 inch wide joist hangers to accomodate the sistered joists. I could weld up some steel brackets, but I would rather buy just something off the shelf.
You checked the simpson strong -tie catalog, or http://www.strongtie.com
Simpson makes all kinds of hangers. They have several that are 3.5" wide, and made for 10" nominal lumber.
You probably need something like a LU410. The others they make are pretty heavy and pretty expensive.
Any lumberyard that stocks Simpson stuff should be able to order them. (Don't bother with the big box stores)
Sometimes truss companies stock them for hanging LVL beams on things.
Have you ever seen a toad sitting on a toadstool?
Thanks for the lead.
I did not know Simpson had that size. I suppose I could trim 1 1/2 inches off the tops to get to 8 inches.
The three and a half inch width is normally for glulam beams so you should be safe that way but modifying any piece of hardware like this can open up issues. IMO anything you do will be better than it is now.Excellence is its own reward!
Solved!
Boss H was right on. The Simpson U410 is only 8 3/8 deep, so with very minor trimming, these hangers are good to go.
Thanks!
They also have hangers like a LUS48 so you wouldn't have to trim anything off.
Horn broken. Watch for finger.
