Hi all,
I’m building a detached garage next to my 100 year old house in coastal Florida. The roof design is a basic gable, with 1 foot overhangs. The engineering calls for 2X4 kickers at 16″ on center to support the overhang and flying rafter (a 2X6).
No my question – is it preferable to lay the kickers inline with the roof plane, or place them vertically. If placed vertically, I’d trim the top to match the angle of the roof so they fit snugly. I think this is mainly an aesthetic question, but I can’t decide which would look better. I think the most common method is to place them inline with the roof plane, but I wonder what to do at the corners of the building.
Unfortunately, I can’t match my house overhangs which have no kickers (5/4 T&G beadboard keeps it up). Both the house and garage do not have soffits and the rafter tails are exposed.
Thanks in advance for any replies and suggestions,
Andy

If ya have the time I think they would look better vertical with the bevelled top and it would also make it more difficult for the birds to squeeze a nest in there. My 2 cents
