hey good idea!
Haole,
Do yourself a favor and investigate local cabinet makers. Fusco would be great if your anywhere near New York. Look in the Yellow Pages under Cabinet Makers. Find a real lumberyard and ask them for names of cabinet makers.
Another day, another tool.
Rich is correct you'll get a far better quality cab for about the same price. Plus if there is any probs you have the manuf. who really cares about his product and rep right there to talk to and not some kid behind a counter who cares about the hottie who works in the tool department. At Darkworks we measure twice cut the cheese once
Where's the job?
What style cabinet do you want?
Painted, primed only, natural or stained wood, type of wood...?
How big is the job?
More info!!!!
If ya go "semi" custom...I like Wellborn(e)....can't remember if there's an E at the end for some reason right now.
Their top level compares with anything else on the market..and their lower levels are still decent cabinets.
Legacy makes a nice lower end product..and their cardboard ppacking boxed are built like tanks......very well secured..very well packed...makes for a nice delivery fresh off the truck.....
unlike the last coupla shipments of Kraftsmaid that I've unpacked.

thanks, i will check them out
i am still in early design stage, thinking about arts and crafts style natural cherry with black granite counters and ss appliances, you know like half the kitchens in FH! haha! its a nice look
I've been operating a custom cabinetry business for seven years now and I've found through informal research that I'm able to offer better quality, service and price than many of the lines that Home Depot and others offer. I'm NOT talking about the low end Mills Pride stuff. When people tell me that they can get their cabinets at Home Depot for $4,000.00 I tell them to go ahead and wish them good luck. On the other hand, on some of the higher end stuff, I can offer the same quality INSTALLED for what HD sells it for less delivery.
On average, my material costs (that's raw materials only) run from $3-$4,000.00 for a modest sized kitchen. The average installed prices start at around $8,000 and go from there.
I highly suggest you talk to a local cabinetmaker. Look closely at their portfolio, ask allot of questions, ask for referals, but don't waste his time if you're not prepared to spend at least $7-$8K.
It may sound a bit cavalier, but I came to the point where I had to start telling prospective clients "I don't do $5,000.00 kitchens".
Where are you located? I'm in California, let me know if perhaps I can help you out!
Good luck!
I don't build kitchen cab's.....just install them...among other things...
But I've started to use the same logic. HD carries seconds, as far as I'm concerned..and the design staff at my cab dist has years vs their months of design.
I can compete because I buy from the same dist that my Dad did.....and have used local custom builders when the project made sense to do so......
but I have to agree whole heartly .........a good custom shop...or a good installer working with a quality dealer....can closely match HD or any big box in price..and out perfrom in quality.
Don't scrimp in a kitchen....it's the hardest working room in the house. the bath would be a close second..and guess what...there's cab's in there too!

Jeff-
I agree wellborne makes an ok cabinet but the last kitchen I put in from them they stapled the shelves in the corner wall cabinet for shipping. It was with those fine little wide crown wire staples and getting them out screwed up the cabinet and shelves.
What's up with that?
is this woman an idiot or what? she cant read a contract?
its her fault for not reading her sales receipt/contract if she thought that demo and new cabinet install was part of her buying cabinets, or did this "pimply faced monkey" LIE to her? if he lied then that is fraud, sounds like her elevator does not go all the way to the top!
