You answered my roof venting question – now for a new challenge. Just rec’d my annual kitchen & bath issue tonight. Read it by flashlight while riding to dinner (Dome light broken.) Made me think of “Break time” for the answer to our problem. Wife has a humongous Kitchen aid K-5 mixer she wants to stow under the work top on a disappearing shelf. We have seen them in “Idea” type magazines, but never with poop on where and how to buy them. We have talked to cabinet sellers, and none knew what we were talking about. (Looked at us like we had worms crawling out of our ears!) Can anyone help us?

Don,
Amerock has what your looking for, called Hide-a-shelf. Fits a minimum inside cabinet dimension of 22 1/2" high x 14" deep, width determined by wood shelf that you supply, max appliance size 12" H x 14" D. Should be able to get one thru most good lumber yards or cabinet shop suppliers. I'm sure other companies make something similar, just had my Amerock catalouge handy.
*Chuck: Doesn't work. This is the BIIIIG K-5 w/ the crank on the side. It is at least 14 inches high. Kitchenaid makes two versions of this mixer that look almost the same. Until we got on this kick we thought they were the same height; saw the two sitting side by side in a Sears, and what a shock - one's taller than the other. That sucker is also Heavy - I know, I get to rassle it out from under the cabinet when it is needed. She also wants to mount a Cuisinart on one of those shelves, and the Amerock sounds about right. Thanks for the poop - it's a start, and maybe can lead to more.Don
*Hi Don,You may have to look into workshop cabinetry ideas for a solution for your big tool. You will probably have to have a section custom made by a real cabinet maker or master carpenter. It's not that difficult to design and build but does require site visit for dimensions and compatibility with your existing cabinets and kitchen layout.Gabe
*Don,there is a company called "Hafele" that makes and/or distributes everything furniture and cabinet as far as hardware goes. Their catalogue is huge and hard covered to boot. Phone # 1-800-423-3531. In my book, what you want is on page 5.8 and it says that the load limit is 26 lbs., sounds like it could be an issue. There is also much other cool stuff your wife might like in the kitchen acc. section.another place you could try is "outland hardware" can't find their catalogue this a.m. so no # but you could try 1-800-555-1212 information.Good luckBeWell, PB
*Any chance you could just have a big "appliance garage" built in somewhere ?
*Don I installed a Hide-a-shelf for the mixer you described about one year ago for a client.I have received no complaints. You can try and purchase it form Outerwater Hardware (800-631-0342)their a national wholesaler that sells to the trades. The catalog # for the Hide-A-shelf is OUT#:AME-10-2G.If you want the shelf level with counter top you'llhave to remove the top draw from the cabinet.9
*I once put a kitchen in with 42" wall cabs. We put in a 36" diagonal wall cabinet in the corner. I made an appliance garage under the corner cabinet. This is just another way to do this.
*While remodeling a kitchen, moving it from the front of the house to the middle, I had some dead space from an old closet that was in one corner of the new kitchen. Utilized that space for a microwave niche and put the microwave on a platform, installed full-extension glides to the sides of the platform and can pull the microwave out from its niche if need be.Would there be any behind the counter, in the wall space for you to do the same with that big mixer? A tambor door or a flat that just lifts up behind the upper cabinets could conceal the niche and the contents. Electric is also located in the niche.Andy, that's tip #3 for this month. Please send a check. Thank you. (Sticking tongue out at Adrian).
*I wanted to install one of those fancy pull out mixer shelves for my wife. She says no. All the mess that happens around the mixer would be on the floor.
*Rockler shows one in their catalog that takes machines up to 16" height depending on shelf depth.www.rockler.com. Item #29462, $99.99.
