We have a custumer who wishes to repalce the 4″tile on her kitchen counter top. she is tired of the tile. Does any one know of a source that would explain the pros & cons of the various materials? It would be nice if there were somthing from the internet. thanks Junior

Steve Thomas of This Old House fame has a book on kitchens (This Old house Kitchens). There's an excellent chapter in the book about the pros and cons of various countertop materials. The book should be available at your local library.

I think Consumer Reports did a pretty comprehensive comparison in the last year or so. Sorry, Can't remember exactly when, but great list of pros and cons of each. Covered from SS to cement.
There was a piece in the annual FHB Houses issue about 2 yrs ago.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.

Put "pros and cons of different types of kitchen countertops" into Google and got 14,700 hits. The very first one gave a decent description of what you were asking.
As some here say, "Google is your friend."

Yea, 4" does date a kitchen, but can be beautiful if done well- new tops-money- how much does she want to spend -first question- and important. Ive worked with granite, marble, stainless, composite, concrete, copper, butcher block, - each has its own pros and cons- find out if she cooks, or if she bakes, or is vegitarian or kosher. Granite is the most costly, easy to clean.marble the same, stainless- sanitary, industrial looking, pain in the but to clean. composites good pricing, but really messy to install, sanitary durable, copper requires waxing, but is beautiful as it patinizes, butcher block is least costly, requires some maintanence. I have used plastic laminate once in 27 years. nothing wrong with it either- low cost.
your granite and marble can run from 4000 and up, so many to choose from-some 46$sq.ft, some well over a hundred- these are also influenced by the number of cut outs for sink, stove, if there is a backsplash etc.
