Wall cabs flank and are atop an over-the-range microwave. I think good design would be to have the microwave face about 1″ proud of the surrounding doors, thus the wall cabs should be deeper than standard, about 14-1/4″ overall.
To stick with a standard depth, we’ll be having the microwave unit stick a full 3-1/4″ out past the plane of doors.
This is a kitchen-to-be, and I am fine tuning my cab order. Deeper wall cabs make for easier storage of large plates, etc. What do you think?

Gotta agree with your assessment. A microwave sitting 3+ inches proud of the cabinets will stick out like a sore thumb, drawing attention away from the cabinetry. Just make sure there is adaquate room for the microwave door to swing open. Some microwaves require some space on the hinge side, though not much, a quarter inch or so. A good depth, imho, is the depth of the microwave, with the micro's door proud.
Another option instead of deeper cabinets is to build out a soffit along the wall where the cabinets will be attached to, this provides an excellent space for under cabinet lighting, which every kitchen reno seems to need/want.
Good luck.
Two things come to mind. Deep uppers are a plus if you have large dinner plates. Some of them don't fit into a standard 12". Mount the uppers toward the higher end of the usual 16-19" from the counter top so there is less visual encroachment on the counter.
