I’m putting down pre-finished oak strip in my kitchen.
Rosen paper or 15lb felt??
House is in northern NJ, 25 year old split, plywood underlayment. I know this has been talked over before, but I didn’t have much luck doing a search.
Thanks for any and all info.

Hey Andy, having seen this question posted many times before, I think you're going to get more of an election result than an answer.
My vote is rosin paper. Felt smells like tar for a good while (just my experience -- maybe my nose is too sensitive?). I've seen a lot on using felt on the first floor to keep moisture migrating up from the basement from getting into the floor too quick, but I've not had a problem with that (knock wood). ;-)

Thanks - I didn't even think of the smell The floor is over the boiler room and part of the garage - both bone dry
there won't be any smell after the floor is down...Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->

quieter, better VP barrior, out preforms and out last rosin...
during the install rosin will tear very easily...
when yur sink over flows the felt won't care and the rosin will start the rot process..

Hey,I am getting desperate. And Max, the mut, is trying to chew on my leg.
even though I like Phil better than U ...
seriously ... I use rosen.
and stop throwing those boards around while doing the install ... the paper will stop tearing!
besides ... if I didn't use rosen for floors ...
where else would I use it?
gotta use it ... hate to see a whole industry go away ...
plus ... it's prettier ...

consider the paper between the floors as a bearing plate when both of the floors ar moving in different directions...
let's keep a lot of those squeaks in check if you will please...

Everyone has a reason why to use one or the other, but I just tore up a 70 year old floor that had 1/2 rosin and 1/2 felt. (I guess the original builder ran out of one or the other 1/2 way through the job.) The rosin paper was essentially dust. The felt was still intact. I used felt when I replaced it.

I feel felt is better and just read where 30# is a vapor barrier and 15# is not so much so. Hey, who's for plastic?
