planning tobuild a 3′ x 8′ eat-at kitchen island. finished surface to be 3/4″ walnut splined & edge glued. will have a 3/4″ply substrate & will attach walnut to substrate with screws in slotted holes (for seasonal movemen). Question, is 3/4″ ply strong enough to handle the 12″ cantileveror do I need to beef it up? Thanks for the help.

With that kind of built up counter I wouldn't know for sure cause I never did it. You know walnuts poisoness don't you?..........It'll sure do a number on a horse...don't know about using it for an eating surface.
As far as the overhang goes, I've seen it done, but I generally try to create some sort of good looking knee braces just to make sure it don't pop when uncle charlie tries to lean his 290 lbs on the corner of the overhang.

I don't know what's up with prospero but I posted a long reply an hour ago to this which basicly said what goes before except that the overhang needs to be longer than 12" for comfortable leg room. Convince yourself witha mockup.
Then use solid wood runners or corbels for support.
It's irritating when people double post...
Oh, so you mean that fitz asked the same question twice in two different places? No wonder my answer didn't show up here. Excellence is its own reward!
Yeah,
Same thing that happened to you has happened to me. Compose and post, go back to the discussion at a later date...where'd my words of wisdom go?
Three or four times that night...frustrating.
