We want to add a raised countertop for eating to the back of the peninsula in our kitchen. Could someone please advise me as to the height and other relevant dimensions of the knee wall that I assume I have to build to support the thing? I have three corbels that will actually be bearing the weight of the top, but need to know if 2×4 construction is sufficient to support an 8 ft x 18″ piece of granite. Also, I believe I read somewhere that 42″ is the standard height for a raised eating counter. Is this correct? Thanks!

42" is a good place to start from. I have mine at 43", because I like to stand at the counter and eat, and that's the height that's comfortable for me (5' 10"). For the width, 13 or 14" is about the minimum. Oh, I see you're going to have 18", that will be good. 2x4 construction will be fine as long as it's tied to the peninsula in such a way that there will be no concerns about the wall moving back and forth.
