Getting ready to do a bathroom remodel and we are planning on going with a Kohler cast iron tub. Does anyone know if the lip on the tub around the wall is of sufficient height for a three wall installation (backer board and Tile) with a shower. Reason I am asking is I saw a tub similar to the one we like but the lip does not seem to be very tall (barely .5″ compared to other having a lip of at least 1″). I am concerned it might not do the best job keeping water from getting back underneath/behind the wall (or trust the caulking) since the shower will be used on a regular basis.

The cad file on the link shows the lip at 7/16". Given my experience, keeping the cement board up a bit (to prevent wicking), caulking and doing the same with the tile - water won't get up and over the lip, even if it's not quite a half inch.
Just did a shower with a Kohler cast iron 30x60 shower pan. The lip was almost non existent, and the pan is really shallow. Made me nervous, but as far as I know, all is well.
Thanks for the info so far. I am still kind of on the fence what to go with. Since it appears from searching the web Kohler is the only mfg for cast iron tubs for a 60" opening are there any other suggestions for a good quality tub?
When I installed the identical tub I wondered about this as well. In my case I didn't worry so much because I am using it as a dedicated tub, not as a shower. But you're right... it's not much of a lip. To help keep water shedding out from under the tile, you might install some blocking between the studs and apply some peel and stick membrane, overlaying the lip just enough to direct water out. Then overlay the peel and stick with your wall water barrier. In my case, I used 15 # felt.
I've been pleased with the Americast (American Standard) tub I put in my house. Was especially happy with it carrying it up to the second floor. Not much noise in the room below if any from taking a shower - can't really comment on how well it holds heat for a soaking bath. Cleans very well, even with our very hard water.
If this helps any, I just installed a new Kohler cast iron sink at home, in the kitchen. After only a week of normal use, it is scratched to heck and chipped already. the coating is paper-thin.
Our previous sink was cast iron and other than being dull, the coating was in great shape. not a scratch or chip after 11 years of our own use and maybe 50 of the previous owner's use.

Yes, I've noticed that too! it seems like the porcelin coating now days is very soft compared to older sinks and tubs..
You're kind of getting off track, but AS Americast seems to hold up very well, and they'll send you a free repair kit should it ever get chipped. Though I've never had a chip in my tub, I tested them (AS) anyway (claimed that I did), and the repair kit arrived a week later. Can't complain.
thank you for the heads-up.

shouldn't be a problem. Backer board goes to the top of the lip, tile goes to the top of the tub. Grout and caulk water shouldn't be able to get up there
