I installed laminate floors in one room about 2 years ago and have been very impressed with the durability and ease of maintenance. However, I put down 3/4″ (blue) foam under these floors and they seem very noisy when my dogs walk on them. I’ve been thinking about installing laminate in the bedroom but the noise is an issue. With 3 dogs sharing the room with us the noise could be a major problem. I don’t get enough sleep as it is and don’t need the sound of toenails scraping around on the floor.
What I’d like to know from others here is if they’ve tried any of the newer “sound deadening” laminate floor padding systems and how well they worked for you.
Thanks in advance.

Unless you are talking about the floor below (2 story house), I don't think any surface noise is reduced by any underlayment.

It is a 2nd floor room but the noise downstairs will probably not be the issue.
Um.....carpeting?
Seriously. Underlayment will only help deaden sound transfering to the living space below.
Toenails scraping the flooring itself cannot be muffled within the same room by subflooring.
Earplugs?

The easiest fix would be to get some slippers for the dogs.
You know someone has 'em.
It would be interesting to watch them walk around on laminate with slippers.
That would be cruel.

I had a friend who's dog died after eating a leather slipper like these.Seriously (not that dogs dying isn't serious) there are new underlayment systems out there that advertise significant noise dampening under laminate floors; QuietWalk and others http://www.mpglobalproducts.com/quietwalk_index.html My theory is that a floating laminate floor acts a lot like a drum skin, sort of magnifying the sound. Agreed that the nail scratching noise is unavoidable but on one floor we've already installed it seems unduly loud. I suspect a different underlayment may help.
Thank you for interjecting that about the dog.

We occasionally go to a bar that has lam floor. Didn't think it would hold up, but remarkable has, though I don't spend any time on the floor for that close look.
Remarkable how the sound of a woman walking on laminate make the legs longer and the heels higher. Now that is sound only.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

He's just checking out the floor, not trying to look up the long-legged high-heel-wearing lady's skirt.
I'm usually passed out drunk when I lay on a bar floor.
no time to check out anything ...
maybe look up to see why I fell off the bar stool.
