I live in an area of high humidity during the summer. My main floor has circa 1968 vinyl flooring. I would like to lay prefinished 3/4″ cherry hardwood flooring. Should I take up the vinyl, and the 3/4″ plywood it is adhered to, or should I allow it to remain in place and serve as a moisture barrier? I plan to use 30# tar paper as a barrier if I take up the vinyl. Thanks in advance.

The vinyl likely contains asbestos.
asbestos.
If it in fact has asbestos in the lino, then going over it effectively contains it.
