Well after 18 months and more $$$ than I want to add up, I’ve got two new baths. 3rd floor toilet over flows, runs through ceiling, I race up and turn off toilet, fix flapper, etc. And clean up water on 2nd floor landing. This particular bath is in the center of the house, and the drain pipe (hub cast iron) runs vertically and exposed on the 2nd floor landing.
Then I notice that I’ve actually got a tiny leak through a split in a section of the drain pipe. It’s about 5″ long and ends at a bell, so I think the joint may leak a bit too. I know in the long run I’ll have to replace a section of the pipe, but I would like to wait so that I can find out how much MORE of it I will have to replace. (You wouldn’t believe how the pipes are run in the basement. I guess they didn’t have concrete saws in the 1930s when it was converted to a boarding house.)
So, what can I do for a temporary fix that will last 6 months or so? Ultimately this will be the guest bath, but I would like to use it just to make sure it works ok.
Thanks!

JB Weld
I have had a crack in my cast iron soil pipe that I fixed with 2-part marine resin about two years back. It was about the thickness of a pencil point and ran about three feet. I cleaned the area with a small wire toothbrush, mixed the resin, and leak free since.
The guy and the local plumbing store stocked the resin for just such leaks. I had tried the JB weld and similar Home Deopt suggestions, and they never really stuck good. The marine resin was really thick so it did not run.
