My house is almost 4 years old and has asphalt shingles. It has rained here in Memphis for 5-6 straight days, and my roof has developed a leak. I cannot get to the leak from inside because it is located on the 1 1/2 story wing of my house where there is no way to get to the rafters ( the water runs down the rafter to the kneewall). I have not closely inspected the shingles yet, but from the ground I see no damage to the shingles. Does anyone know why it might be leaking, assuming no damage to the shingles? What sort of hidden damage might there be? Do you think my builder should shoulder this problem?

Hello Jsl , its tuff to tell you why you might have a leak without a picture of your home or more info. But it most likely is a simple flashing problem. As for the builder if he gave you a 5 year or more workmanship guarantee then yes, he should take care of it. If he gave you nothing in writing chances are your on your own. But have no fear, if you can get a Roofer there to take care of it, it should not cost to much. "Good Luck and stay dry". Ron
*You'd be surprised how much water can come in through a little hole. This is especially true when get rained on for several days in a row. It's hard to tell you what your problem might be without seeing your roof, but here are some common problems. 1. Look for exposed nail heads that have worked their way up. 2. Same thing, but look for nail heads that fall between the two shingles on the next course.3. Flashing , Flashing and more Flashing, I rarely ever see a chimney that was flashed right. As a matter of fact when I used to work for builders doing flashing the roofing crews didn't even touch it, things that should have been done by the roofing crew were left undone and we came behind them and fixed all the things I guess they didn't know how to do. As far as flashing goes, there are several possibilities, there could be a chimney, a rake (where roof meets wall) or some special pan area that wasn't laid out right. (one long shot is sealing the brick on your chimney sometimes it works)Good luck with your builder 4 years and they usually don't even know who you are. But who knows, maybe you got a good one, its worth a shot.
