I've got the earlier version - the Leica Classic5A (I think that's what it is called.)
It's larger than the newer A series, but functionally identical.
I use mine for estimating basement and other remodeling and also for running trim and checking measurements where a tape would be less accurate and not as easy.
It has a scope - which is needed if doing any long distance measuring outside.
I really like the form factor of the Hilti's, but their mid level one only has I think a 3 measurement history.
PLS makes a clone of the Leica (my model), and I've seen it for a good deal on Amazon occasionally.
They are exactly accurate, soo running trim with them is a no-brainer.
I wouldn't want one without a scope, cause it is handy to have.
The main diff between the A5 and the A2(?) is that the 5 series doesn the triangulation function - probably more important in the commercial feild than in residential - haven't honestly needed that function ever, although the tool guy in me likes having it there.
The Leica's also have a minimum and maximum measuring function - that is handy for check square of forms, ect. and is nice for getting the exact measurment of something that is hard to hold the laser still enough to lock a measurement on.
Like most specialized tools, it takes owning it a while to realize how widely it can be used and how indispensable it is.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I'll go with the A5.
hilti has two new models coming out. I think one has a scope.
don't know if you have checked them out pd 40 and 42 I think.

Yea, I checked it out at the hilti store (one with a scope).Seems like it was closer to $500, but I really like the form factor - about the size of a pack of ciggarettes.Only drawback is their really small last measurement memory - only saves like the last 4-7 readings.I could see uses where you might want to make the rounds and tally up a bunch of readings away from where they were read. For size and durabilty alone though - I'd get the Hilti - seems very well made and very fast.JT
I have a PLS1. Great tool.
Hilti makes a couple of models as well. We have used the Leica Disto for around 6 years and it works well. Looked at the Hilti recently and was impressed with both its stated accurracy and its pricing. Have not used one but would definitely consider if we were to purchase another one.
