For you guys that were talking about using a chalkline or level line to figure out how much to add to studs on out of level foundations. I made a cheesy powerpoint sketch and wanted to know if that is what you meant.

I can't get the cheesy sketch to load. A water level works best.
We just leveled floor structure on a place by shimming up the mudsill--up to 2" in som places.
We used a dot laser at one end of the wall and could just measure up or down to the dot as we went along.
A good discussion topic might be what's better to do, cut studs different lengths or block up the platform on bad/out of level foundations.
My theory on this project was that if the foundation was ever replaced (a definite possiblity...) then the house could sit right back down on a level foundation with no issues...
?
That's a six of one, half dozen of the other type call Waters. I've done it both ways. Usually, it's much faster to level the mudsill as you are suggesting. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
Digging into this project, I actually phoned Notchman.. who I've come to know locally, to ask him his opinion.
He had one, and away we went.
Once things where shimmed up and the rims and subflooring fixed and replaced, we started framing walls and things were PERFECT! Top plates level all around to a 1/8th. The sheathing up the corners on 10' walls--edges just touching allt he way up the corner. A beautiful sight.
We'll see if it stays that way or not. The shear nailing we are req'd might help. Some walls are 8's 2" oc on all edges--and backed by 4x member.
Hence my absence. Only here on the weekends. Job is on the Oregon Coast.
See you next weekend!
Why do you use powerpoint?
Get Sketchup. It's a free program from Google.
