what do you guys use when you prep a floor for a hardwood install.
I avoided the cement based self leveling compound because I didn’t think it was the right product to use with hardwood. because I didn’t think the nails would shoot thru too well in 1/4″ of concrete.
and if it did I am worried that the compound might chip and become loose pieces causing problems under the hard wood.
Instead I went with a trowlable product that has more of a plaster feel to it. It is sandable and recommended for hardwood installations.
The problem is that it sets so fast. bag says 15 min but really it’s more like 5 before it becomes dificult to work with….the product would be fine if it had a slow set time. also I have to keep scraping the bucket clean everytime I mix the next batch otherwise the next batch gets full of all the “crumbs” wich well…you know the story…..frustration.

can the bucket. Make a mountain on the floor and depress a gravy hole. Pour in COLD water, pull in the sides while mixing in with a trowell. Spread quick. Don't mix more than you can handle. By doing it on the floor you'll save precious minutes.
