Hi-
I will be laying down a laminate floor (Pergo type) in a new construction home. Since the crown did not come out of some of the floor joists, there are high and low spots in the subfloor. What is the best/easiest method of leveling the subflooring before laying the finish floor laminate? Different people have suggested several possibilities:
1. Placing another layer of subfloor in order to span the high/low spots.
2. Floating the low spots with quickset material.
3. Use a belt sander to bring down the high spots to match the low spots.
4. Use thicker padding under the floor (however, if I use anything other than the factory padding it will void the laminate warranty).
Thanks for the help.

1. Placing another layer of subfloor in order to span the high/low spots. No, by the time you get it level you will only have about 2" spare to the ceiling. You will find yourself chasing your tail and not getting anywhere.
2. Floating the low spots with quickset material. Floor leveler like Mapei will certainly do the job. Take your time and use one that can be feathered to 0".
3. Use a belt sander to bring down the high spots to match the low spots. Do that in conjunction with no. 2.
4. Use thicker padding under the floor (however, if I use anything other than the factory padding it will void the laminate warranty). Wouldn't help to increase the padding thickness. Don't worry about the warranty, it's not worth the paper it's written on.
