The AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) has a light gage steel technical assistance division. I've received several good papers from them, generally free, with all sorts of info of the type you are looking for. Since I don't have the address at hand, I'd suggest a Yahoo search or something like that. There are also some good books (review them at amazon.com) on residential steel construction.
