My workbench sits under a sheet metal heating duct. I inherited a bunch of slim-line undercabinet fluorescent lights (no, not bright enough for SAD). Is there any reason why I cannot mount those fixtures directly to the sheet metal of the ducting?

I wouldn't drill through the ductwork. How about plumbers strap around (if round) the duct?

Other than cycling or skating I am not much into the "man" sports.
I can see how it would be easy to do this and that at the same time.

Just a peeve of mine. No offence meant. But you get what you give in this world.
I am sure that there a miriad of reasons, either code related or other. I am going to come down on the side of doing things right. If you have a workbench, then make something that satisfies the requirements, withiut hanging electrical fixtures from other mechanical devices which were not intended to be electrical supports or raceways.

Uhh........do you mean "welding the fixtures onto something" or do you mean "welding things together while standing at the workbench"?
;^0
I took it to mean he welds on his work bench, and that "lights" it on fire...

Yep! A long bead, and invariably I start smelling smoke.
Back to the OP, I put 4-tube troffer fixtures (2x4') overhead, and then have melamine-faced cabinet doors over the workbenches to reflect diffuse light from in front of me.
I find directly overhead light makes shadows.
And, I probably would screw the lights directly to the ductwork in my own house , if I was convinced it was well supported and well grounded.
