We had a lightning storm about three days ago that fried my answering machine and left a bank of lights on one circuit in the shop out of commission. The other side of the shop’s lights are on another circuit and functioning normally.
I jiggled wires and lamps, reset all the breakers including main, flipped the switch and inspected it visually for arcing–no sign of the problem. It was getting dark, so i waited for daylight to go in with the circuit tester to narrow it down–and the lights were on! The flourescents have taken a beating–some of the tubes were out or black on the ends, and the last time this happened i had to replace a lot of units because the ballasts melted down within a couple months, but the circuit was ON…
Does anyone have any idea why the circuit would need a day of rest to get up and going again after the surge? Is there something i should be looking at replacing (breaker, switch?) after this behavior? I’m thinking it will be harder to sell this place if it burns down…
Listening for any ideas or voices of experience out there…
