ok, we had a big storm here, and lots of homes got damaged
we were trying to help out some old floks ( 80’s+)
building department said, ok , we know that the storm caused lots of problems, we will give you an over the counter permit, if you replace like with like, so a 2×6 was there you put a 2×6 back
any changes, then we have to go the normal permit process, which can take weeks
so 2×6 rafters on a hip, 2×8 ceiling joists, the spans, no go, for me or you
and bumping up would be difficult to plane into the rest of the house
but like for like, we replaced what was there, to get this lady covered up
guess what, we failed inspection
isnt like for like mean , a 2×6 for a 2×6
now we have to add pony walls where there was not any
cross bridging where there was not any
and that is all ok, my contract will cover that, but its not like for like
any of you run into that ?????? like for like

"like for like" is probably the most open ended comment I have ever heard being said by an inspector.
The only thing I would hazard a guess on is that the scope or extent of the repair work was much larger than the inspector thought it was.
Problem now is that he/she is in control and you have no recourse unless you can go over their head to a higher authority.
Lesson learned is get it in writing .. even from inspectors you know.
sound like inspector are the same no matter where you go. Sorry I dont have any experience with this type of situation.
