I could probably research this. Probably take half a day to do so.
A few years ago, could have figured it off the top of my head.
Seems I am losing more of what I used to know… than I am learning new, to take it’s place. LOL
Anyway, I know someone here can come up with the answer in a flash, so I’ll just ask…
Neighbor has decided to try a sump pump, for watering her trees.
She wants to run almost 200 feet of wire, to power the sump pump.
Here’s the specs on the pump:
120V, 60 Hz, 1 HP, 750 watts; 6 working amps
What guage of wire is she going to need for the run ?

I'll guess #10.

ther are a few of them in the internet.
I typed in voltage drop calculator
Interesting toy.I run #10 for all my tools at the job except any cords less than 25'.but I figured since this was low amperage and probably coming straight from the panel, the 12 might be OK.But that calculator shows I need to get under 150' length or down to less than 4.5amps top use #12.While playing with it, I also got to thinking that in that sort of constant run application, even with water cooling the pump, silt and debris could make it work extra hard to be drawing top amperage, so I retract any thought of #12 for that.

I ran a problem on the calc. program and got "300 MCM".. what does that stand for?
Bill
mcm.. I don't remember what it stands for... but I know from previous experience that it's a &itch to pull through conduit
million circular mils1 mil = .001 "300,000 circular mils300kcmilI used to have a 5' piece of 2000 MCM , but one of my buddies scrapped it.

"M" means one thousand.

I do contradict myself don't I , we always say it as 300 thousand or just 300 the 2000MCM I mentioned is called out as 2 million

Thanks, DanH's link shows it to be 4/0... man, is it gona' cost...

I'd run 10 but 12 might do OK

Thank you all.
That is exactly the sort of thing I used, the last time I made a long electrical run.
Helped someone else with it, not too long ago, in fact.
Today, I am just swamped. Couldn't think straight enough to even remember the online calculators.
Thanks again.
I'm not worried, I'm curious...You are always welcome at Quittintime
12ga will give you about 3% V/D (4.6v) and that should be OK. What does your voltage usually cruise at?
At my house it is 123-124v so I can even tolerate worse V/D.
If something i running all the time, the other issue with V/D is efficiency but I doubt your sump pump runs enough to worry about that.
I have no idea what her voltage averages...I'm not worried, I'm curious...You are always welcome at Quittintime
" but I doubt your sump pump runs enough to worry about that."
Since she is planning to use it as an irrigantion device, it would be atypical use oof it and would probably see heavy use each day it is turned on.

It should be noted that most sump pumps are speced for intermittent duty -- maybe 50% duty cycle.
DanH seems to be on top most electrical questions but in regards to the pump, go with the next smaller gauge wire (fatter) to assure your handling the start up power surge/draw. Safe guess #10
