Dude!
I'm no security guy, but I'm gonna say ask Gunner. I'm not sure if he gives advice, about that stuff, but he is in the bizz.
Hold on, if he's sleepin' he can be cranky!
I'll check.

That looks like a pretty good setup. We use more industrial DVR's but that one seems to fit the bill for what you need. Being able to automaticaly dump images without motion is a big plus.
ok now speak real slow,i don't understand anything electronic built since 1980!lol
"Being able to automaticaly dump images without motion is a big plus. "
whats that mean?guessing it makes a frame by frame picture?????????
is 500 gb enough for 9 cameras ?

I may be wrong but I think he means the camera only records when there is movement, like when the door opens, maybe? It would save alot of storage space.pb
What happens is your DVR records everything. You set a storage limit. When it reaches that limit it dumbs all images that don't have motion in them. That way you can keep images that mean something or you may have to review later on your hard drive longer.
I don't know gigabytes from gummi bears. That's something I can't grasp so I can't help you there.
The thing with camera systems is that unless you're watching the monitor 24/7, all they can do is give you a grainy picture the next morning of the thieves carrying your stuff away the night before.
i grasp the point that some are just going ahead and break in. but there is something very intimating about being on camera,i think that would stop the kids in the neighborhood from screwing around. i do think the video is alot better anymore.
i have had a couple extremely fired up tenants that i rent houses to show up at my home, screaming and yelling.wouldn't mind having them on camera and them knowing it.
had a friend with one 15 years ago, they broke into his house ,found the vcr recorder and stole it also.the older i get ,

I'm not a big expert on this, but there are some basic specs to think about.
First off, cameras come with varying resolutions, and varying abilities in terms of focus, zoom, light gathering (ability to work in dim light). Also of course, they vary based on indoors vs outdoors, quality/flexibility of mount, etc.
You don't necessarily need the highest resolution camera, but a blurry image where you can't recognize anyone won't do much good. (This relates too to how close the camera is, and how wide a field it's viewing -- narrower field means closer image, but not as much ground covered.)
The DVRs also vary in terms of the resolution they'll handle, how many cameras they'll handle, whether they record all cameras at once, or switch between them, whether they do motion detection (and essentially only record if motion is detected), etc. And of course there's the issue of how much time they'll record -- you want something that will reliably record for several days over a long weekend, etc, and ideally for considerably longer, so when you discover that the back shed you never check was broken into two weeks ago you can go back and look at the pictures.
You should assess how many cameras you need, how close/far they are to the action, etc.
Don't know of any web sites that cover all this stuff, but there are bound to be several. I'd guess that Crutchfield has some info.
here is what i did... with gunners help at the time...
i have a pretty cheap 5 camera (wired) system off ebay... records all the time color with sound... think it was less than $300 3 years ago... still working great... have it hooked up so i can watch my warehouse and condo project from any computer... i have a very cheap alarm system with a dailer... if any of the motions go off i get a call on my cell phone... all i can see is the phone number where the call comes from... i can then log on and take a look around... beats the alarm going off and have'n to go see what caused it in the middle of the night...
I don't know how it could be any better for what i need...
