I’m looking for a handbook or primer on interior design that I can give to my clients. I don’t mean an “idea book” but rather a book on basic design and how to think about interior design. Specifically, how to organize one’s thinking so that it progresses logically from the function of the room to the mood or spirit of the room and how it expresses the particular client’s personality.
For my architecture clients I use a book called Homing Instinct. Now I’m looking for something similar for the interior work.
Any suggestions?

D/B, Terence Conran has several really excellent books on interior design - very down-to-earth, very beautiful, and very, very inspiring - subjects cover everything from DIY to sophisticated planning. I have about four or five that I delve into periodically, and never fail to learn something new, or come away with a new idea. they might be fairly expensive (don't know - bought all of mine either second-hand or as clearence items). I don't have this one, but would certainly make a point of buying it in a heart beat if I were in the midst of renovating anything.
might not be your answer but one of my favorite archy's is Robert Stern.
Look at his very expensive hard cover book..lots of great ideas in there...DW was pissed that I spent eighty bucks on it until she needed to spend twenty minutes on the thrown after a fresh fig and prune breakfast I fixed her......Bwahahahhaha.....I actually stole a portion of one of his Hamptons houses for the last house I built/renovated....see my website below.
