I have a customer that wants a solid cedar beam (8×8) as a mantle. My local lumber yard here in SoCal doesnt have a source. I seem to remember there are companies that recycle old lumber but I dont remember where to go. Any ideas?

Sawmill?
It doesn't seem like this should be such a though item to locate locally on the west coast. But if so, try Bear Creek Lumber in Washington state. I've used them to ship cross country on just a handful of oversized beams. Freight was very reasonable & you're a whole lot closer! Two thumbs up, 800-597-7191

(No, Andy isn't paying me to say that!!!!)
You could try http://www.sierratimberframers.com/home.html. They're a timber-framing outfit in the Sierra -- where western red cedar is harvested --- and they source timber too. If that doesn't work, google with search phrases involving timber framing or log houses.
