Er, actually a short question about a possible 44′ long deck I may wind up building:
If I’m using 4xr4 posts, and I want to have my beams sitting atop the posts (using post cap hardware), is there enough bearing room on the top of that 4×4 to accomodate 2 built-up beams meeting at each post? Or maybe I just need to go to 6×6’s…
Thanks,
Dave

Depends on the size of the 'beams' but you can just have the one run continuous across the top of the posts and the other T into it with the appropriate Simpson hanger hardware.

I would check your local building codes.
Where I live you have to use 6x6's for posts on a deck except for stairs and landings up to 8 feet high.
