Love hardie backer but one simple ?
I am a big hardie Lap Siding fan.
But for shower stalls, how can Hardie backer board made by hardie be used if it wicks water? I put some in a pan in the kitchen and the water wicks up it.
If your shower stall or bathtub gets used a lot, and has hardie over the tile flange on the shower base or the tub, seems it will be wet 24/7 behind the wall?
Maybe a fiberglass shower stall is better than tile???

Never noticed that. I have just gone with what i've seen which is pieces trapped in water (in the displays) that dont deteroiate at all.
Seems cement board would also wick water. Seems anything in contact with water would wick, this product is made to take it though.

Shouldn't get wet behind the tile unless it is improperly installed.
is grout waterproof?
thanks

No, grout is not waterproof, but if sealed, it's reasonably water-resistant.

Well, you are supposed to span that gap with a good sealant, either clear or color-matched silicone, usually.
That will also protect the "exposed" edge of thinset and the ends of the vertical grout lines from wicking, as well.
Ed, so far every response (the few there are) in this new thread has supported what I've said in your previous thread.
Good argument for Kerdi or Noble Seal.

Proper construction details reduce wicking.
If the shower sees a lot of use, a surface applied membrane Like Kerdi, Hydroban, Redguard, etc. is great insurance.
