Is there a plumber that knows which new low gallon toilets flush without flushing twice? My application is on cast iron system. A few years ago I was convinced that all new low gallon toilets worked okay on plastic plumbing and not on cast iron. Now I need one and want to make sure that the one I buy works. Home Depot says Kohler works. I have used a very early low gal. maybe the first one out and it don’t work on the first flush. It is a American Standard. I got it to work by installing the Fluidmaster flush flapper that holds water in a hopper and this allows all the water to empty. Thanks Handyman51

As you might expect, no current toilet empties on one flush ALL the time...
However, I installed two toilets with the Flushmate PowerFlush tank a couple
years ago.
They work better for me than any of the gravity models I have used. This
Flushmate Powerflush tank was available from Mansfield, American Standard
or Crane (Economiser) when I purchased mine.
Read all about it at http://www.flushmate.com
Happy flushing!
Do yourself a favor and buy a Toto or Kohler.
Both have bowl designs and flush mechanism that promote better flushing. I think Toto makes a better toilet.
But if you have someone in the house who has to unroll half a roll after each horseback ride, nothing will help but a multiple-flush and a plunger.
And then there are folks who can stop up even the most powerful flushers (without the help of wads of toilet paper.)
A friend redid a showerbath with a Toto toilet and pedestal sink.
The flushing action kindof reminds me of the type of forceful flush you see in heavy duty commercial stalls, with a jet that shoves the crap through the trap opening.
There is also a reservoir of water that resides inside the rim cavity that helps with something but which I can't remember for what purpose.
I also found out the Kohler models sold in Home Dump, etc. ain't the same as the better ones available at specialty stores at slightly higher cost.
Try out this past thread:

Also, Consumer Reports did a story on them one or two issues ago. They did have one "best buy" that topped the rankings that was reasonably priced.
I'm not a plumber, so I'll offer my experiences living with two different models as only that; my experiences. I replaced three old 7 gal units in my last house with one Kohler Wellworth Lite (two-piece gravity round front), and two American Standard Hamiltons (one-piece low-profile gravity with elongated bowl that fits the same space as regular round fronts). The Kohler, from HD, clogged almost by looking at it. The Am. Standards, from a plumbing supply house, would rarely clog, even with my T.P. happy family. HD sells the Hamilton, but I don't know if it is the same. I also don't see the Wellworth Lite on Kohler's web site, just the Wellworth. I would buy the Hamiltons again. Just my $0.02.
Be seeing you...
TOTO, TOTO, TOTO...flush once and they work, just like other toilets they can and do have shortcomings, but they are the best out there that I know of, and they are priced fairly.
Bill
I installed a Kohler Wellworth elongated bowl...and I have never had to flush twice. I am one of those guys that can clog the pooper without TP causing the problem...and never, in nearly 3 years now, have I flused twice.
BUT, I do have one other seriously complaint. Uhem. The water level in the bowl is a little low...and the "pile" seems to accumulate above the water level often...and god does my #### stink. Not sure if this is an elongated "feature" or what...but it has me looking for three new toilets for the new house.
For most people, this is most likely a non-iisue. Sorry for the #### details! LOL
LOL, My plumber is pushing TOTOs and the customers are happy with them..
Excellence is its own reward!
>> The water level in the bowl is a little low...
That's better than the opposite problem. The toilet in my upstairs bathroom appears to have been designed by a woman or a eunuch.

Hilarious - Yes, sometimes I find myself doing a cheat flush in the middle of a bombing raid, irregardless of the toilet being low flow or full flow...
LOL...Yes, me too. So in that sense, sometimes it does take more than a single flush!
There's more to it than just flushing out the bowl. You need enough liquid behind the solids to keem them moving all the way thru the system to the city sewer or septic tank. My DWV is all new plastic, and yet I know better than to flush less than 2-3 times, or get a clog down the line.

That flush done midway between the job has a name...it's called a:

Very funny.
More like courtesy toward myself !
The best and most reasonably priced that I personally know of is an Eclipse. They're gravity flush and in a test, flushed thirty golfballs in a single flush. Not just once, but every time. I've put in about a dozen of these and everybody is very pleased. We get them from a local plumbing supply house here in northern Illinois. You're not likely to find 'em in a big-box. About $65 here in white. I know that sounds too cheap to be that good, but they are.
Ive always wanted to know what made a toilet cheap.
Tim Mooney
Tim- as I understand it one qualification of a cheaper toilet is that it will have less enamal on the ceramic bowl thereby making the flush less smooth and the durability lessened from the wear of the water thus providing easier stain later on. Let the thunder crack and the waves roar.
We're going on.
This "Eclipse" toilet - is this a model name or a company ?
Since I have five toilets in two houses to consider updating to low-flow, it would be nice to know of some others besides Toto, which I am leaning toward.
Thanks for your help,
Alan
Eclipse is the brand name of the toilet. I don't know whether they make more than one model as I've never asked and the supply houose only stocks the one model. And yes...they come in 10" 12", and 14" OC models...as well as a highboy model.Knowledge is power, but only if applied in a timely fashion.
