Perhaps this would belong in a regional discussion, but there isn’t one. Does anyone have experience with lumber companies in this area? Danby is 25 minutes south of Rutland. I know I saw a Home Depot in Rutland, but I’m not fond of dealing with them.

isn't there an R.K. Miles down around Manchester? Pretty good yard.
Saw your post- I'm in the southern part of the state, near the Mass. border. There are four yards here I deal with, let me know if you want names. There is also a LaValley's in Rutland that used to be good- we occasionally have gotten stuff from them. What kind of stuff do you need? I get alot of materials from local mills, both air dried and kiln dried stuff.
Mintzer Bros.
Rk Miles in Manchester. Good stock on ALOT of stuff and the best tool store in the area. If they don't have it they can get it pretty quickly. If you're a contractor they'll work with you on pricing, especially if your customer wants to shop you against another yard or HD. Free delivery on just about everything. My favorite yard in southern VT. They also have a smaller yard in Williamstown, MA where I also do alot of work.
There's also Miles Lumber in Arlington - not connected to RK in Manchester. Don't know much about them.
Greenberg's in Bennington is OK...not a big inventory and vendor relationships seem to be weak.
Thanks everyone. I'm not a contractor, just building my own home. I love dealing with local sawmills. I'll look into that RK Miles also.
Hey, try Crosby, right in the middle of Danby on Route 7.
Also a vote for r.k. Miles in Manchester, they probably have deliveries to Danby area almost daily. As far as local sawmills, I don't know, although there is a fairly large sawmill operation cutting softwoods on the east side of Manchester near the 11/30 and 7 interchange. You could also ask the folks at Shushan Bentwoods in Shushan NY about local mills - they do kiln work for a LOT of small sawyers and could probably point you in the right direction.
If your doing your own place and you need hardwoods or if you want the best prices on locally milled flooring around, drive up to Bristol and check out Lathrops Maple Supply. Tommy Lathrop is a great guy and you'll find some good prices, just bought some white oak flooring for $1.65. He's got a lot of real wide pine for floors as well. Its also right next door to A. Johnsons yard which does a lot of premilled pine,T&G, wainscotting, v edged and flooring also. Most all of it from the Green Mountains..... best quality, affordable and local, can't ask for more than that.
good luck.
This is great information, thanks everyone.
