Why isn’t there a Building Materials folder?
Anyway, I’m a homeowner with an upcoming project and I’m going to need decent lumber. Hunting for straight 2×4’s at HD or Lowes is a Mission Impossible it seems. Can anyone recommend a good lumberyard in the Dallas area (I’m specifically in Richardson).
Thanks!

Used to be a good (old fashioned) yard over in Farmer's Branch, most of the way to 35 on Valley View. Memory (and Mapquest <g>) will not recall which side of the park, though (was on the south side of the road in a funny shaped lot, only about 100' of frontage--easy to miss). May be long gone now.
Denton Drive Lumber was not too bad, that's, uhm, Denton and, call it, Walnut Hill off of Stemmons.
The Payless Cashways over on Valwood will likely be like your HD & lowes experiences.
Could try Sitco, over near Royal and Central (up the frontage road heading south from the Royal exit to the next road, which may be Canyon).
Been too long out of town for me, obviously.

I know they were trying to dump Furrows or Cashways to try and prop up business operations. They also, IIRC, had both "factory" and franchise stores--the franchise stores might still be open, if under some bowdlerized title (you can own a Texaco, you just can't sell Shell gas there).
The PC out on Beltline was a reliable place to find one of almost anything, if they had any at all. Need a 12" spike, they'd either have one, or a bin full. Need 5 3/4" street L's, those'd be there, too. Need the spikes and the Ls and any other items, the commercial desk would have some lame excuse. C'est la vie en construction.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Payless was based here.AFAIK there where no franchise operations. But the operted under the Payless, Furrows, Lumberjack, and Hugh Woods brands. All had the the red arcing arrow with the name in it.They where a nice combination between a lumber store and a building supply store. Like the way that you could drive up to get the lumber. Much better than trying to moving sheets of plywood through the isles. But there problem was that they hever had a directions.Every year or so they would change direction from builders, to remodelers, to maintance, to DIYers and back again. One year they got in a Delta DJ-20. That is a big, EXPESIVE, HEAVY, 8" joiner. Would never be at a job site. And most cabinet shopes wouldn't have one either. More for people doing furniture work. Within 4 months it was discontinued at about 1/2 price. That was just the last bankruptcy. They have been through several re-organizations earlier.

Yeah, one of those 'encouraged' me to not finish my first (and only) month in Plumbing at our local Furrow's (circa 1980 or so). Did not miss that place at all.
Said building is still there, it's now a u-store-it type store. Our first, franchized, Lowe's is still here, too--it's a bowling alley.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
