I need to recess a header that will carry the load of ceiling joists (just attic space above). The span is 22 feet. Can someone tell me the correct size of LVL to use. Thanks. -Ed

I never size LVLs unless I can look at the job myself. Plus, there's lots more info we'd need to be able to answer that question.
Like how much is it carrying? What about your local codes - Anything there that would make a difference? Attic storage, or just attic?
Get someone locally to look at it...........

I have 2x6 ceiling joists with a plaster ceiling. Currently they are resting on double 2x12's that span 16 feet. I am increasing the span when I remove the wall to 22 ft. There is just attic space above with nothing being stored in it. I need to remove the 2x12 header and replace by recessing the LVL with joist hangers. Thanks for any help. -Ed
Your still missing key information. What is the tributary width of the load on the LVL (the joist spans)? That is, what portion of the attic load is carried along the 22 foot span? As already recomended, local codes and other site specific information render any size given here useless, so get the beam sized by the supplier....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
Perhaps the yard you buy them from can help you.
